St. Basil Serbian School Information  

St. Basil Serbian School is a voluntary based program that provides introduction and basic learning tools to children interested in learning the Serbian Language.  

This program accepts children from age 5  through 8th grade. Children are divided into groups based on age and existing Serbian Language skills. 

The students groups are as followed: 

1. Serbian Language Beginner Groups
2. a) 7pm – 8pm – ages 5 – 9
3. b) 8pm – 9pm – ages 10 – 14 
4. Ready to Learn Serbian Groups
5. a) 7pm – 8pm – ages 5 – 9
6. b) 8pm – 9pm – ages 10 – 14

During the course of the school year, children will be introduced to a several different topics (letters, numbers, colors, greetings, basic conversations, family and family members, clothing, food, animals, holidays, etc.) and will be prepared to participate in the celebration of St. Sava (January of each year). Children are taught the Serbian Azbuka (cyrilic alphabet).

Many different methods are utilized during the classroom time; quality repetition, singing, writing as well as working on different worksheets or projects, individually or in groups. 

Material utilized during classroom time is a combination of online and teacher created resources. (many available resources have to be modified prior to introducing it to the children, in order to support different knowledge and age group levels).

Small assignments could be given to the children as homework, to encourage students to work on their skills outside of school hours. 

Additionally, it is the teachers’ goal to communicate to the kids at all ages and levels in Serbian only, many times (specifically with the Serbian beginner groups) the combination of Serbian & English has to be utilized to better serve our program.   

Serbian Language classes are coordinated with the dance classes to accommodate for the students that participate in both, Serbian Language and Serbian dance classes.  
Location – Program takes place at the St. Basil of Ostrog Church, Lake Forest, Friday nights starting at 7pm – 9pm.
